'Eyewitness at Oriskany' Essay Winners Announced
Three area students will receive a total of $2,750 in scholarships in Oneida National Bank's "Eyewitness at Oriskany" historical essay contest. H. Russell Johnson, chairman of the board and president of Oneida National announced that the first prize winner is Miss Mary Carter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Carter, Ilion. Miss Carter will received $1,500 scholarship. A senior student at Ilion Central High School, she plans to attend Keuka College in the fall. Second prize, a $750 scholarship, will be awarded to Kathleen Madigan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James F. Madigan of New Hartford; Miss Madigan is a senior at Utica Catholic Academy and will attend the College of New Rochelle. David Gymburch, son of Mrs, and Mrs. Alex Gymburch of Lee Center was the third prize winner and will receive a $500 scholarship. Gymburch is a student at Rome Free Academy. He will continue his studies at Syracuse University. Miss Carter's report viewed the Battle of Oriskany from the perspective of a British soldier; Miss Madigan's paper was presented through the eyes of a patriot soldier. Gymburch recounted the details of the battle scene, as witnessed by an American soldier. The three awards will be presented at noon June 25 in Oneida National Bank's new annex. At that time, the winning entries will be read and a luncheon will be served to the winners, their families, school officials and the contest judges.
