Security, Fire Safety Mulled

ILION - The Ilion School Board last night met with village, school and insurance- officials to discuss security and fire safety.

The meeting was prompted by the April 1 fire at the high school which heavily damaged a science classroom [room 7] in the junior high school wing.

Police and fire officials are investigating the blaze as arson, saying that someone apparently broke a window to the classroom, climbed in and set the fire.

Meeting in executive session before last night's regular meeting, the board heard from Police Chief Lloyd Wadsworth who is heading the investigation. Fire Chief Charles Schierholtz, representatives of the Utica Mutual Insurance Company and Walker & Walker Insurance Agency, Ilion Mayor James Garnsey, members of the Village Board and school administrators.

According to School Board President Warren Lennox, the closed door meeting involved a review and recommendations for an all vandalism policy, including arson.

The Ilion schools have been victimized in recent months with other acts of vandalism, including damage to lavatories which have resulted in their being closed off.

Lennox said the board received a great deal of advice concerning efforts to decrease the risk of vandalism and arson to school property.

Following the regular meeting, the board went into another executive session io discuss the recommendations made during the first session. Lennox indicated that some action way be taken concerning security measures at that executive session, although details were not available at press time.

However, he did list some possibilities as increased security personnel in the district and additional lighting.
