Dr. Ross Helmer Obituary
JORDANVILLE — Dr. Ross D. Helmer, 87, a retired assistant superintendent of Utica State Hospital, died Thursday at the Bella Vista Nursing Home. Richfield Springs, where he had been a patient since August.
He was born on Dec. 4, 1881 in Jordanville and attended local schools. He was graduated from Syracuse University Medical School and practiced medicine in Sauquoit and at Poughkeepsie State Hospital before moving to Utica State Hospital, retiring in 1946.
At one time, he was president of the Utica Academy of Medicine and had served as visiting psychiatrist and neurologist at General Hospital in Utica and at Little Falls Hospital.
He married the former Dorothy Dickerson of Akron, N.Y. The couple returned to the Helmer family home here, following his retirement.
He was a member of the Sauquoit Masonic Lodge and the New York State Medical Association. He leaves his widow. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow from the McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs, with burial in Jordanville Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
