Janet Kirkland - Ilion's First Female Village Trustee ....To honor the memory of Janet Kirkland and her dedication to the Village of Ilion, she was featured on the June 2014 Cover Story of the Alumni Site. In 1988, Janet researched and created a history of the Village of Ilion elected officials. She compiled information on every President/Mayor and Trustee as of that date. Janet's booklet chronicled the history of Ilion government, up to 1988. She dedicated and presented this booklet, which was titled, "The Honorable James F. Garnsey", to former mayor James Garnsey IHS '49. With the permission of James Garnsey, this wonderful booklet, the history of Village Elected Officials is now available. (June 7, 2014)

Condolences....Michael John Morris, IHS 1957, age 84, of Ilion, passed away on February 13, 2025 at the Siegenthaler Center. Mike was born on June 22, 1940 in Ilion, NY, a son of the late Michael and Anna Surdya Morris and he attended Ilion schools. He was employed as an Accounts Manager with MDS in Herkimer for many years. Michael served in the US Army as a cook, which led to the many unforgettable memories of Thanksgiving at "Grandpaw's" house! He built his own home on Barringer Road where gardening and hunting was his passion. An expert fisherman, he often came home with his limit of whatever fish he was going after. Most important, was his family, often telling stories of his fishing and hunting accomplishments, or sharing in a game of Yahtzee. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his daughters, Laurie Maurer of Missouri, Michelle Waite of New Hartford, Susan Hook and her husband, Greg of Ilion; his grandchildren, Thomas and Britt Waite of Saranac Lake, Ryan Waite of Fayetteville and his girlfriend Maggie Brown, Alex Maurer and Kassi Maurer of Knoxville, TN, Jesse McDowell of Ilion, Conor Hook of Ilion, and Cory McDowell and his wife, Jackie of Ilion; his great-grandchildren, Ella and Cole McDowell with whom he shared a special bond for nature, hunting and fishing and Scarlett Maurer, his newest great-grandchild; sister, Nancy Kolwaite and her husband, John of Schenectady and Paul Morris and his wife, Omayra of Florida. He remained close with his former sons in law, Steven Waite of Ilion, LeRoy Maurer of Missouri and Robert McDowell of Ilion. Mike was predeceased by two sons, John Morris of Colorado and Steve Morris of Utica as well as one sister, Marion Hamric and her husband, Richard. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 10:00 am in St. John the Evangelist Church, 66 Oxford Rd. New Hartford, NY. In keeping with Mike's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. Ilion, NY. Maurice W. Monteau, IHS 1957, age age 83, of Mohawk, NY, passed away with his beloved family at his side on February 9, 2025, at Wynn Hospital. He was born on October 6, 1941, in Saranac Lake, New York, a son of the late Maurice D. and Madeline (Dean) Monteau. Maurice was a graduate of Ilion High School, Class of 1957, and went on to attend college having been the recipient of an associate’s degree in 1964 from Alfred State University. His working career was evident at Eastman Kodak, 1964-66, thence with Remington Arms, 1966-2001. In his earlier years he enjoyed water-skiing and liked to fish and hunt. He was a talented carpenter, having rebuilt his home. He was very neighborly, always lending a helping hand. He was a member of the East Herkimer Fish & Game Club, and Blessed Sacrament Church of Mohawk. His marriage to Margaret A. "Peg" Stowell took place in 1964, a loving and devoted union of 60 years. Maurice was an exemplary patriarch to his family who survive him, including his wife, Peg, son, Jim Monteau of Mohawk, sisters, Carole Monteau of California, and Joyce Dean of Oregon, and brothers-in-law, Richard and wife Johanna Stowell of Mohawk and their family, and Ronald Stowell of East Herkimer and his family. He was predeceased by an infant son, William, a brother, Wayne, and a sister, Diane as well as his parents. Calling hours will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 19th, 2025, at the Applegate, Day, & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road (Town of Frankfort), Ilion, NY. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 20th, 2025, at the Blessed Sacrament Church, East Main Street in Mohawk, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Nella Mae (Clark) Harter, IHS 1957, age 86, passed away on Thursday evening, Oct. 31, 2024, at Wynn Hospital, Utica with the love and support of her daughters, Barbara and Terry at her side. Nella Mae was on born February 4th, 1938, daughter to the late Mr.& Mrs. E. Richard Clark of Ilion NY. She was married to John F. Harter who passed away on August 6, 2000. She leaves behind her five children, sons, John and David Harter, daughters, Barbara Brown, Joanna Gregory and Terry Morgan, her sister, Marilyn Paragi. Nella Mae also leaves thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews. She will be missed deeply by all. Her funeral arrangements are private and under the direction and care of Daniel J. Elisabeth "Chic" (Hitchcock) DelGrego, IHS 1957, passed away, at home, on Friday, May 10, 2024 at, 85 years young. She was surrounded by her loving family who cared for her until the very end. Elisabeth is survived by her devoted children: her daughter, Tracy (Donna) DelGrego, of Webster, NY; her son, Lawrence (Kim) DelGrego, of Ilion, NY; her grandchildren, Luke (Alex) DelGrego, of Sauquoit, NY, Troy (Logan) DelGrego, of Ilion, NY, Paige (Mark) DelGrego, of Ilion, NY, Zach DelGrego, of Miami Beach, FL and Matt DelGrego and Kate DelGrego, of Webster, NY; and her great- granddaughter, Collins DelGrego. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Noffer, of Ballston Spa, NY; her brother, Jerry (Debbie) Hitchcock, of Gainesville, GA; and her sister-in-law, Sherry DiTripano, of Sinking Springs, Pennsylvania. Chic also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Chic was predeceased by her adoring husband Lawrence “Babe” DelGrego; her parents, Willis Hitchcock and Catherine Williams Goering; her brothers, Willis (Marion) Hitchcock, Douglas (Irene) Hitchcock and Robert Hitchcock; her sisters, Jeanette Richway and Gertrude Tangora; and sister-in-law and brother in law, Sheila and Robert McFeeley. Born on May 6, 1939, she was a life-long resident of Ilion, graduating from Ilion High School, in 1957. Chic worked at Marine Midland Bank, in Ilion and Utica. Later she worked for the family business, DelGrego and Sons (Parker Gun Repair). After completing her accounting degree, she was employed by H&R Block. Her love for her hometown was evident. She dedicated over a decade on the Ilion school board. With her partner Babe, she spent many hours on the sidelines of Ilion sports: football, field hockey, wrestling and even truck pulls, loyally cheering for Lawrence and her grandchildren. Chic also served as a Deacon at the Presbyterian Church, in Ilion. Chic and Babe enjoyed many domestic and international trips with life long friends and family. Their love of grandchildren also took them to Webster to cheer from the pool deck and the sports field sidelines. They especially loved their time camping. A fierce competitor, Chic never turned down the opportunity to play cards or participate in her weekly mahjong games. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing golf. Chic loved to find the best bargains on her wonder "full" days shopping with Tracy and Barb. James Richard Barnes, IHS 1957, age 83, of Albany and formerly of Ilion, passed away on November 11, 2023 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland. Jim was born on July 9, 1940 in Ilion, the son of the late Raymond R. and Florence E. Hoke Barnes. He attended Ilion schools and graduated Valedictorian of the Ilion High School class of 1957. He went on to obtain his Bachelors Degree from R.P.I. and his Masters Degree from the University of Albany. Jim was employed as a Statistician with the New York State Education Department for 32 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the American Statistical Association, Albany Chapter, and the Association for Educational Data Systems, NY Chapter. He bowled in two leagues for 10 years and ended his career with 180 average in his final year. He was a respectable tennis player and he loved downhill skiing, especially at Gore Mountain, well into his sixties. He was an avid NY Mets fan and R.P.I. Hockey fan. He also loved golf, no matter how badly he played. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ilion. James is survived by eight cousins and two nephews. In keeping with Jim's wishes, there will be no public services. He will be laid to rest privately at Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion, NY. Mary Lou (Leach) Hebert, IHS 1957 age 82, longtime resident of Clinton passed away at Hospice of Danbury on October 5, 2022. Wife of the late Kenneth N. Hebert. Mary Lou was born in Ilion, New York on December 30, 1939, daughter of the late Bernard Leach and Marjorie (Ackley) Leach. Loving mother of Kara Franco of New Haven. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Ariana Franco, Gabriella Franco and Jaydon Robinson. Brother of William Leach of Georgia. Predeceased by a brother Ben Leach; and a sister Jane Leach Mrs. Hebert is a 1957 graduate of Ilion (New York) High School and St. Peter's School of Nursing in Albany, NY. Before retirement she and her late husband Kenny owned and operated the Guilford Optical Shoppe in Guilford for many years. Friends are invited to a graveside service on Wed. November 2 at 11:30 am at the St. Mary's Cemetery, 54 Beach Park Rd, Clinton. (November 5, 2022)
Raymond F. Bentzl, IHS 1957, age 84, of Ilion, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2022 in The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing in Ilion with his loving family by his side. He was born in Ilion on February 20, 1938, the son of the late Raymond and Evelyn Wilson Bentz and he graduated from Ilion High School with the class of 1957. He was married to Beverly Tennant on August 29, 1957 in the Church of the Annunciation. He was employed as a Computer Board Etcher with MDS in Herkimer for many years. He was also a proud Volunteer Firefighter with the Ilion Fire Department with 50 years of service. Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; two sons, Scott Bentz of Ilion and Gregg Bentz and his wife, Betsi of Watertown; two daughters, Susan Bentz of Herkimer and Roberta Drescher and her husband, Peter of Hilton, NY; his grandchildren, Bradley Bentz of Virginia Beach, Kyle and Regan Bentz of Virginia Beach, Kirstin Drescher of Hilton, NY, Heather Drescher of Rochester, NY and Kayla Bentz of Watertown, NY; his great-grandchildren, Arayiah Bentz, Greyson Bentz, Stella Bentz; his sister-in-law, Donna Barrett and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was Predeceased by one brother, Ronald Bentz. Calling hours will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM with a service to follow in the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St. in Ilion. Frances Ann (Spatol) Turner IHS 1957, age 80, passed away peacefully Jan. 21, 2021, at her home in Georgetown, surrounded by her closest loved ones. A 1957 graduate of Ilion High School of Ilion, New York, Fran married and relocated to Kentucky to become the proud and caring mother of three children. Fran was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown. Fran spent most of her career working in Bookkeeping and Finance and ended her career proudly working at Quest Connect/Quest Farm in Georgetown. Fran was well liked by everyone who knew her. Her kindness and generosity knew no boundaries. She was loved and cherished by her family and friends and was known for her contagious laugh and sense of humor. Fran is survived by her children Steven R. Turner of Dwight, Illinois; Thomas D. Turner of Georgetown; Sandra J. Turner of Lexington; two grandchildren Rylan Turner and Alyson Turner. Three siblings Jane (Thad) Smith of Saratoga, New York; and Donald Spatol of Westport, New York. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews and their children. Fran is preceded in death by parents Joseph and Ruth Spatol, and by her brother David John Spatol who was very special to her. (December 30, 2021)
Sally A. (Day) Bogardus, IHS 1957, 81 passed away on Saturday October 17, 2020 at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse. Sally was born March 16, 1939 in Ilion the daughter of the late Stanley and Marion (Johnson) Day. Sally was a graduate of the Ilion High School class of 1957. She united in marriage to George E. Bogardus on November 26, 1971 in Ilion. She was employed for many years by MDS in Herkimer as a Quality Control Inspector. Sally is survived by her husband of 49 years George, a son Brad Bruce, FL, two brothers Donald Day of Ilion and Charles “Boots” Day of St. Louis, MO., a sister Doneta Sporney, VA., two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a son Brian Bruce, brothers William and Darrell Day and sisters Esther LeClair and Arleta Day. Funeral services at this time are private and at convenience of the family. George H. Bracken, IHS 1957, age 80, of S. Main St., Herkimer, formerly of Ilion, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2019, at the VA Medical Center, Syracuse. He was born on February 2, 1939, in Utica, the son of James E. and Mary (Booth) Bracken and attended Ilion Central High School. George was a veteran serving in the US Navy. He was married to Carol Bundrick, on February 20, 1960, at St. Mary Magdalene Church, in Springfield Gardens, NY. George was employed as a Computer Technician at Sperry Rand UNIVAC, in Ilion and Utica. He later worked as a Maintenance Supervisor and Plant Engineer, at Duofold Co., in Ilion. Mr. Bracken was a member of the Church of the Annunciation and sang in the church choir. George served as a Trustee on the Ilion Village Board and was an Ilion Pop Warner Football coach for many years. He was a member of the Ilion Jaycees, the Maennerchor and the Ilion Moose Lodge. He was a volunteer at the Great American Irish Festival for 15 years. Mr. Bracken was also past President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was an avid S.U. Basketball and Football fan and season ticket holder. Surviving family members include his wife, Carol; his daughters, Debra Bracken, of Buffalo and Patricia McDonald and her husband, Kevin, of Acworth GA; his sons, George T. Bracken and his fiancée, Cynthia Nasypany, of Gastonia, NC and Edward Bracken and his wife, Linda, of Ilion; six grandsons, Michael, Daniel and Bryan McDonald, Timothy Bracken and James and Sean Bracken; his sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Paul Grainger, of Ilion; his brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Gail Bracken, of Ilion and William Bracken, of Waterford, NY; sister-in-law, Carol Bracken, of Bluffton, SC; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters and brothers, Mary Wood, Pat Burm, Nancy Bracken, Tom Bracken, Bernadette Bracken, Barbara Whitfield and Jim Bracken. Alice R. (Ingraham) White, IHS 1957, age 79, of Shull St., Ilion, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019, at the Grand Rehabilitation & Nursing Home, Ilion. She was born on March 20, 1940, in the Town of Herkimer, the daughter of Walter and Grace (Bowman) Ingraham and graduated from Ilion High School in 1957. She was married to Donald "Pete" J. White, on September 26, 1959, at the Free Methodist Church, Herkimer. In her early years, Alice was employed at J.B. Wells Dept. Store, Utica and Chicago Pneumatic Co. She later was a cook at the Ilion Hospital and most recently, Alice worked at the Mohawk Homestead. She was a former member of the Ilion Women of the Moose. Alice enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching QVC, and also liked watching NCIS and Law & Order T.V. shows. Surviving family members include her husband, Donald "Pete" J. White; her son, Donald V. White, of Ilion; her daughters, Lisa Marie Whitmore, of Easton, PA and Wendy Rae White, of Ilion; her 6 grandchildren, Amanda Burritt, of East Meridith, NY, Samantha Charlotteen, of Ilion, Bradley and Kaleena Whitmore, of Easton, PA, and Jessica Bowman and Crystal Boyett, of Ilion; several great-grandchildren; her sisters, Joyce Sanderson, of Ilion, Jeanette Young and her husband, Jack, of Town of Columbia; her brothers, Gary Ingraham and his wife, Roberta, of Ilion and Vaughn Ingraham; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Walter Ingraham; her sisters, Jean White and Linda Schrader; and her brothers, Ingram Ingraham and Richard Ingraham. Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home's original location, at 102 West St., Ilion. A Memorial Service including a Celebration of Alice's Life will be held immediately following calling hours, at 6:00 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Ellen (Eastwood) Lanphier Arnold, IHS 1957, age 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, April 20, 2019, in her home. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side. Ellen was born on July 24, 1939, in Ilion and was a graduate of Ilion High School, Class of 1957. On May 23, 1959, she was united in marriage to Howard J. Lanphier in the First United Methodist Church in Ilion. Mrs. Lanphier first worked as a secretary for the John Bergan Law Office in Rochester. In 1978, she joined her husband, Howard, in their business, Murphy Funeral Service, Mohawk. She retired when Mr. Lanphier passed away on February 18, 1998. Ellen had a strong belief in God and was a very active member of the Mohawk United Methodist Church. For a number of years she had served as the church secretary, was a past president of the Mohawk United Methodist Women, served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Church Administrative Council, member of the Eveready Class and Tri-D; she directed the Junior Choir. She was a member and past secretary of Mohawk Chapter #319 Order of the Eastern Star and also served as a Girl Scout leader. On July 12, 2003, she married Winfred C. Arnold in the Mohawk United Methodist Church. They were members of the local chapter of the Jayco Travel Club. Together they enjoyed their retirement by traveling, meeting and making new friends. They made their home in both Burlington Flats where they attended the Burlington Flats Baptist Church and Mohawk where they attended Morning Star Ministries. Ellen will always be remembered as a very loving, caring and helpful lady who was totally devoted to her family, especially her cherished grandchildren. She will be deeply missed. With warm and tender love, she leaves behind her devoted husband, Winfred C. Arnold, a son, Howard Lanphier of Herkimer, a daughter, Marsha Griffith and Steve Schiavi of Mohawk, granddaughters Sarah Pavia and Rick of Rochester, Stephanie Fransman and David of Cold Brook, Stacey Griffith and Ben Gurtowski of Herkimer, and Andrea Pearl Lanphier of Herkimer; two sisters, Joyce Bateman of Brocton, and Nancy Bouck of Ilion, several nieces and nephews; Winfred's children Kathleen Cournoyer of Burlington Flats, Charlene Liddell of Oneonta, Charles Arnold and Audrey of Burlington Flats, and Darlene Benjamin and Robert of West Exeter, grandchildren Dustin, Leanne, Spencer, Brent, Britney, BJ, Mike, and Roger, as well as several great-grandchildren. Calling hours for Mrs. Arnold will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the Fenner Funeral Home, Inc.,115 Court Street, Herkimer. A funeral service will follow immediately after at 7:00 pm with the Rev. James Henderson, Pastor of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, and the Rev. Robert Wollaber, Pastor of Morning Star Ministries officiating. Internment in Mohawk Cemetery will take place at a later time convenient to the family. Members of the Evening Valley Star Chapter #82 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 4:00 pm for ritualistic services. Diane (King) Fikes IHS 1957, 78, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2018. She was born in Herkimer August 10, 1939, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Clara Moore King, was a graduate of Ilion High School and was united in marriage with Richard Fikes on May 12, 1978 at the Church of the Annunciation. Diane was employed as a computer operator with Abeloves Laundry and with Associated Textile and Rental Services prior to her retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Church of The Annunciation, Ilion, the Herkimer American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Catholic Daughters. Diane is survived by her husband Richard, a daughter Patti and her husband Stephen of Oriskany, her sister Barbara Kiefl of Ilion. She is also survived by her nephews and nieces, Todd and Kathryn Remis, Deborah and Richard Schoff, Shawn Remis, Pamela Listovitch and Katherine and Jason Long, several great nieces and nephews and a special close friend Maryleigh Filipiczuk and her family. She was predeceased by her sister and brother in law Carolyn and James Remis and her brother in law Roger Kiefl. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at 12:00 noon from the Church of Annunciation, Ilion with Rev. Paul Catina officiating. Walter L. Smith, IHS 1957, age 80, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Folts Home, Herkimer. Walt was born on February 7, 1936 in Mohawk the son of the late Walter and Emma McClain Smith and graduated from Ilion High School. On April 12, 1957 he was united in marriage with Lillie Bacon, she passed away in 2012. Walt was a veteran of the U. S. Army and owned and operated Walt's Auto Repair in Ilion for many years, after retiring he was with Advanced Auto for almost ten years. He was a member of the Ilion First Presbyterian Church and active in church affairs, he loved racing and worked many years at the Fonda Speedway where he was a Tech Inspector. Walt is survived by a daughter Pamela Latt of Mohawk, a son James Smith of Dunedin, FL, a brother Ronald Smith of Ilion and his daughter in law Judi Smith of Ilion also eight grandchildren: Courtney Witt (Lance Thompson), Dustin Jennette, Selina Latt, Thomas Walter Latt, Walter L. Smith III, Matthew Smith, Joleen Smith and Baliee Smith, also 2 great grandchildren Gavin and Christian Thompson, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Walter Jr. in 2011. Mr. Charles L. "Larry" Conover IHS 1957 of Ilion, passed away very unexpectedly at the age of 77 on Sunday morning, December 13, 2015 at Faxton St. Luke's Hospital, town of New Hartford, NY. He was born on March 8, 1938 in Ilion, a son of the late Charles H. and Helen Mary (Bartowicz) Conover. He was a graduate of Ilion High School, "Class of 1957." He went on to enlist and serve our country with the United States Air Force. His marriage to Justine C. "Judy" Harwood took place on December 27, 1969 in Ilion. The couple shared the utmost amount of respect and devotion to one another throughout their nearly 46 year union. Larry worked for 36 years with Remington Arms in Ilion. He held many jobs there inclusive to accounting and even ran the Remington Arms store. He retired in 2001 and at that time had been on the production line. He was a member and a Trustee of the First Baptist Church of North Utica. Thinking back on Larry's legacy we reflect on his love of reading and history. He was always there to make us laugh and just be happy in general. His dancing ability, playing the harmonica, playing the bongos, going camping in the Adirondacks and especially Rockport, Massachusetts are all memories we will hold dear in our hearts forever. He is survived by his beloved family, his wife, Judy, his children, Jeffrey Conover of Ilion, Julie Conover-Rudwall and her husband Jamie of Ilion, Timothy Conover and his significant other, Mumba Chisunka of Syracuse, and Emily Conover of Ilion, his grandchildren, Morgan Rudwall, Isabelle Rudwall, and Jake Rudwall, his brother and sister-in-law, Jim Conover and wife Judy of Ilion, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special and dear friends deeply loved. Albert Joseph Helmer Jr. IHS 1957 - (Al), 'Butch' age 76 of Ilion passed away on Monday August 24, 2015 at Little Falls Hospital. Al was born on August 22, 1939 in Herkimer, he was the son of the late Albert J. and Catherine Mary (Seaver) Helmer. He attended Ilion Schools with the class of 1957 and was employed at HCCC until his retirement in 2000. On October 12, 1968, Albert married the former Betty Doremus at the People's Undenominational Church in Cedarville. Al was a member of the Ilion Presbyterian church where he served as Deacon for 10 years, Herkimer German Maennerchor, a former member of Ilion Moose Lodge 1010, he was also an avid bowler. Jeffrey Lawrence Hopkins IHS 1957, lost a long battle with cancer on July 28, 2015. Born on January 11, 1940, in Ilion, NY, he joined the USMC and was honorably discharged in 1968. He graduated from Syracuse University. He worked for General Electric Company for 13 years and Motorola Government Electronics Department for 10 years. He has several dozen papers published plus 6 technical books on astronomy and one family history. He is survived by two younger sisters and their families, Pamela Rose and Erin Dunckel. He is also survived by two children and their families, Stephanie Ann Schramm and Charlie Ryan Hopkins. A Celebration of Life Gathering was held on August 8, 2015, at Haus Murphy's in Glendale, AZ. Samuel Folsom Selwood IHS 1957, 76 of Penn Yan entered the gates of larger life, peacefully at home on June 3. This good man was born on January 16, 1939 in Ilion, NY to Helen Graham Selwood and S. Folsom Selwood. While at Union College he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and enjoyed the friendship of his brothers throughout the years. After graduating he began his career in insurance claims and eventually retired from Caliber (FedEx) in Akron, Ohio as the Risk Manager in 1997. He then moved to the house he had finished on Seneca Lake and began to pursue seriously his lifetime interests in archery and hunting, while continuing his woodworking. He especially enjoyed his ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) friends and working on the archery course at the Duck Club. He had truly enjoyed his 26 years in Penn Yan. In those years, he took pride in his work on the Torrey Town Planning Board and in helping to construct the columbarium at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he will find his earthly resting place. He is survived by Pat, his wife of 53 years, daughter Michele Shaar, son-in-law, Tom, their two boys Hasan and Mark Shaar, his two sisters Joan Annutto(John) and Diane Williams (Steve Newton), as well as nieces and nephews. Gordon R. Disotelle IHS 1957, 76, a long-time Ilion resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Folts Home, Herkimer with the love and support of his family. Born in Ilion, NY on May 15, 1938, he was the son of the late Raymond and Laura (Peters) Disotelle. Raised and educated in Ilion and Malone, Gordon was an Ilion High School graduate and honorably served his country by enlisting in the United States Army. On July 13, 1963 he was united in marriage to the former Florence Volo at Annunciation Church, Ilion. During his employment years, Gordon worked as a technician for Univac, was a supervisor at PAR Technology in New Hartford and was a manager at one time for the Ilion Elks Lodge. He was a fan of the New York Yankees, an avid golfer, and was a handyman, enjoying painting and wall papering as a side job. He was a member of the Ilion Elks Lodge and Annunciation Parish of Ilion. He is survived by his wife Florence, his son, Michael Disotelle of Mohawk; his daughter, Shelly Disotelle of Columbia, MD; his sisters, Shirley LaValley and husband Bernie of East Herkimer, Esther Viparina, and Linda Edick and husband Allen all of Ilion. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mildred Volo of Mohawk; in-laws, Elaine and Jim LaPietra, Brian Volo, Bill Volo, Patty Volo and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to acknowledge Hospice and the staff of the Folts Home for the care and compassion given to Gordon during his time spent there. James S. Remis IHS 1957, 77 of Ilion passed away on Friday April 17 2015 at Mohawk Valley Health Care in Ilion. Jim was born on August 25, 1937 in Ilion; he was the son of the late John and Rachael (Conover) Remis. He was a graduate of Ilion Schools and served in the US Navy. On November 25, 1961 Jim married the former Carolyn King. Jim worked for 20 years as an installer for Martin Green and Sons and then for 19 years as Maintenance Director for the Ilion Housing Authority. Jim was a member of Annunciation Church, the Knights of Columbus joining at eighteen, received his 4th degree and was a life member, the Ilion Fish and Games Club and the IFD Company 1 for over fifty years, the IFD Rescue Squad where he participated in many competitions. Jim's other passions were being a member of the Annunciation Bazaar Committee and was a co-chair of the Bazaar for several years. Jim is survived by his wife Carolyn; two sons Todd and his wife Kathryn of Ilion and Shawn of ; a daughter Debbie and her Husband Richard Schoff of Ilion; a brother John of MD and three grandchildren Jacob and Claire Schoff and Elizabeth "Lizzy" Remis all of Ilion. He is predeceased by a daughter Paula and two brothers Michael and Charles. A memorial mass for Jim will be celebrated on at at The Church of The Annunciation in Ilion with Fr. Donna (Coriale) Clapper IHS 1957, age 73, of 34 Green Street, Mohawk, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012. She was born on April 25, 1939, in the Town of Frankfort, the daughter of Salvatore and Mary Rose (Lennon) Coriale. She attended Utica schools until 1954, at which time her family moved to Ilion. She graduated from Ilion High School in 1957. Donna worked for the New York Telephone Company until her marriage to Robert Tallman, and raised her four children. Her love of cooking and children led to a career of thirty-four years in food service at Mohawk and Herkimer schools. She later married Richard Clapper, Sr., a union of thirty-one years, and was co-owner of Clapper's Hollow Ice Cream Shop, and together they catered many functions in the Mohawk Valley area. She was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church, forty-six year member and past president of the Mohawk American Legion Auxiliary and the New York State Food Service Organization. Mrs. Ann E. (Palmer) Vivacqua IHS 1957, age 70, of West River Dr., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, April 17, 2010 in the comfort of her home after a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of her passing she had the comfort of her children by her side and the rosary being recited. She was born in Ilion on November 29, 1939, daughter of the late Elmer J. and M. Lillian (Brothers) Palmer and graduated from Ilion High School.. She furthered her education and began following her dream of becoming a teacher attending Herkimer County Community college, Saratoga Empire State College, and finally Oneonta State University eventually obtaining her certification in elementary education. Her last professional employment was with Annunciation Catholic School as a 2nd grade teacher and served in the same capacity formerly with St. Mary's Academy in Little Falls. Ann was also employed as the first woman foreman for Remington Arms, Ilion. Her marriage to Fred Vivacqua took place in Annunciation Church, Ilion. He passed away November 12, 2008. Mrs. Vivacqua was a strong and faithful Catholic belonging to Annunciation Church, Ilion. Religion was very important to her. She was past regent for the Catholic Daughters. Survivors include her children: Donald Vivacqua and wife Lorraine of Falls Church, Virginia, Maryjo Pedersen and husband Tom of Ilion, Ritamarie Vivacqua of Ilion; sister: Mary Murphy and husband Bill of Ilion; in laws: Jeanne Marie Palmer of Rome and Juliann Palmer of Ilion; two adored grandchildren: Trinity Ann and Taylor Alexis; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers: Richard B. Palmer and Michael H. Palmer and by a sister, Margaret. Donna "Mimi" (March) Steele IHS 1957, 69, of 30 Massachusetts Avenue, Ilion, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, December 3, 2008, comforted by her husband and three children. Donna was born November 27, 1939 in Ilion, the daughter of Nelson and Dorothy March. She graduated from Ilion Central School in 1957 and married Robert "Banjo" Steele on August 8, 1959 at the Annunciation Church in Ilion. Donna was employed as an executive secretary for the superintendent of the Ilion Central School District, retiring in 2002. Donna is survived by her husband, Robert "Banjo" Steele of Ilion, a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Kristin Steele of Lowville, NY, two daughters and a son-in-law, Chrissy Peck of Fabius, NY and Wendy and Richard Cummings of Groton, NY, a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Patricia March of Ilion, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Carol Steele of Cedar Lake, NY and Bluffton, SC, a sister-in-law, Marilyn Nencetti of Lithia, FL, her grandchildren, Jenny and Hattie Steele, Jacob, Hannah, and Maggie Peck, Kylie Zehr, and Samantha and Nicholas Cummings, her step-grandchildren, Josh, Andrew, and Erin Cummings, a great grandson, Chad Peck, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Benjamin A. Russell III IHS 1957, 67, of Constantla, passed away peacefully on Sunday. August 12, 2007 at his home with his loving wife and family by his side. A 1957 graduate of Ilion High School, and a 1961 graduate of Colgate University. Ben was a veteran of the Army and served as a member of a Special Military Intelligence Advisory team (SMIA) in Vietnam, for our country, before graduating from the Syracuse University College of Law. In 1969. Ben went on to form a partnership with Charles J . Yorkey as "Yorkey & Russell Law Firm" then "Russell Law Firm", now known as -Russell, Russeli & Grasso, PLLC" of Central Square, New York. Ben was an avid golfer and held memberships over the years at Greenview, McConhelsviile, and In Scottsdale, Arizona, where he enjoyed winters with his family. A very caring, versatile and community-minded individual. He served as the Town of Constantia Attorney for 30+ years. During that time, one of his proudest moments was when he facilitated the donation of the Lakefront property previously owned by the local Bank, now owned by North Shore Library. Ben was always willing to make hospital and home visits anywhere to make life more convenient for his fellow man. For many years Ben donated his time and experience to the fire departments, various ambulance companies, libraries. the Masons, the VFW, many Denominations of Churches, Central Square Endowment Foundation and the Moot Court Program at Central Square High School, which he helped create. Ben also served as the anonymous Secret Santa from December to January at 'Good Gotlys Restaurant' for the dedicated SOVAC Ambulance crew. Along with his love for his family and friends, Ben enjoyed the beauty of nature and growing flowers. Ben is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joanne (Lay); two sons, Scott Alden, Liverpool, NY, formerly of Arizona and Nevada, and David Edward (Cheri) of Brewerton. NY; a grandson, Benjamin Thomas; a sister, Jane Russell Nile of Aptos, CA; and four nieces and two nephews in CA and M.A. As Ben wished, there will be no funeral services ar calling hours. Judith Kay (VanDelinder) Slater IHS 1957, 68, a lifelong resident of Ilion, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 2, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Judy was born on May 1, 1939, the daughter of the late Glenn and Lorrabelle VanDelinder. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert, who died in 1996. She graduated from Ilion High School and attended Alfred State University. She spent 25 years as a valued member of the Ilion School District cafeteria staff. She will be remembered for her steadfast commitment to her four children and her unwavering strength; as well as her love of antiques, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by her four children, Kerry and his wife Laura of Long Beach, N.Y., Kelly Webber and her husband Chet of Montvale, N.J., Jeff of Hull, Mass., and Amy DiMaria and her husband Frank of Cicero, N.Y.; as well as her longtime friend Bill Williams. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren who brought her so much joy and love, Emily and Alexander Webber, Lucas, Patrick and Colin Slater, and Nicholas and Hope DiMaria. A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11. Following the service, Judy's children will be hosting a gathering at the Moose Club, 302 Barringer Road, Ilion from 2-5 p.m. and extend an invitation to Judy's friends to join them to celebrate her life. Rodney Lennox Sr. IHS 1957, age 67, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007. He leaves his loving wife of 43 years, Carol; three children, Susan Lennox, Heather Manou and her husband Nick and Rodney Jr. "Corky" Lennox and his wife Mindy; four grandchildren, Alex Mosher, D.J. and Leah Manou and Gavin Lennox; three brothers, Warren and his wife Sharon, David and his wife Pat, and William and his wife Barb Lennox; brothers-in-law, Robert DeVos and his wife Jan and Douglas DeVos and his wife Linda; nieces, nephews and many close friends. Rodney was a retiree of Fison Pharmaceuticals. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at Willard H. Scott Funeral Home, 12 South Ave., Webster, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Janet C. Kirkland IHS 1957 and Barringer Road Teacher, age 64, Ilion, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2004, at Faxton Health Care, Utica. She was born August 9, 1939 in Utica, the daughter of the late Robert and Pearl McWilliam Kirkland. Ms. Kirkland was a graduate of Ilion High School, LaMoyne College, and received her Master's Degree at Potsdam College. She was employed with the Ilion Central School District, teaching 4th Grade at the Barringer Road School until her retirement in 1995. Janet also served as a trustee with the Village of Ilion from 1979 to 1983, and again in 1987 and 1988. Ms. Kirkland was a member of the Herkimer County Retired Teachers Association, the NYS Retired Teachers Association, and was appointed to the Marion Brill Scholarship Foundation Review Committee in 2000 at the Ilion High School. Janet is survived her a sister, Roberta Danforth of Ilion; two nieces and their husbands, Sheila and Daniel Brindisi of Whitesboro, Debra and Francis Knowlton of Ilion; a nephew and his wife, Robert and Doreen Danforth of Albany; a great-niece and nephew, Alec and Kaley Brindisi of Whitesboro; and special friends, Edwina and Bernard Anderson and their son, Lawrence of Mohawk. She also leaves many other close friends. Funeral services for Ms. Kirkland will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2004, at 1 p.m. from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego Street, Ilion, with the Rev. George B. Greene officiating. Interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call Saturday, January 24, 2004, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home. Friends are asked to consider memorials to the Janet C. Kirkland Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Ilion High School, PO Box 480, Ilion, NY 13357. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Gale B. (Brown) Seibert IHS 1957, age 60, of 67 Center St., Ilion, passed away Monday, April 10, 2000, at Faxton Hospital. She was born Feb. 12, 1940, in Ilion, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret Van Alstine Brown. She was a graduate of Ilion High School and C.C.B.I. in Syracuse. On July 23, 1960, she married William Seibert in Ilion. Gale was employed as office manager with Kitchens by Nicholas in Herkimer. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ilion, the Ilion Little Theater Club and White Otter Fish and Game Club. Gale is survived by her husband, William; a son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Chong Mi Seibert of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Russell Earl of Ilion; her mother, Margaret Brown of Ilion; and a granddaughter, Erin Earl of Ilion. Funeral services for Gale will held at 11 a.m. Friday in Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. Friends may call Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St., Ilion. Gerald John "Jerry" Reape IHS 1957, 57, a retired University of Idaho professor, died of a heart attack Thursday, November 27, 1997. After graduating from Ilion High School in 1957, Jerry attended Syracuse University. He later began a career in the U.S. Navy and retired as a lieutenant commander in 1981. He earned a degree in Architecture and Electrical Engineering from the University of Idaho. Jerry leaves behind his wife, Harriet Nortman Reape of Troy, Idaho. He is survived by two sons, James of Turlock, CA and Gerald of Boise, Idaho, a daughter, Lodi Price of Moscow, Idaho, a sister, Betty Manore of Goleta, CA, and a brother, Bernard Reape of Newport, NY.
