Ilion Jet Pilot Officially Listed Killed In Korean Mission

Ilion - The government of the United States has regretfully updated the file on a missing Ilion flier and declared officially him killed in action in Korea in 1953.

Mr. and Mrs. James Allston, 32 John Street, parents of James H. Allston, received word yesterday from the Air Force no new evidence has been turned up on their boy and is being changed from missing in action to killed in action.

Major General John H. McCormick, director of military ... for the Air Force, in his letter to the Ilion family, reported information already known about Jim.

In a bombing mission over ... three other pilots on Lt. Allston's plane were making a bombing raid on enemy truck spotted on ... Korea, and did not come out of ... was seen to crash into ... and burst into flames. the letter added. No parachutes were observed or survivors found and no further word was heard from the Ilion pilot.

Allston, a popular and well liked man, graduated from Ilion in 1946 and in 1947 and attended University and and Ohio State before entering Air Force training in 1951.

He trained at Malcom Air Force Base, Missouri, Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas and received his wings at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas.

After completing advanced jet pilot training at Nellis Air Force Base at Las Vegas, Nevada, he went to Korea in April, 1963, where he flew the F 88 Sabrejet fighter bomber. Two months later he was reported Missing in action.

He was married to the former Marjorie Soss of Camillus, New York, on Dec 27., 1952, who survives along with his parents in Ilion; a brother, Edward C. Allston, U. S. Navy, stationed in the Mediterranean; and two grand parents, Mrs. Edward Camel, 227 Otsego Street, Ilion, and S. M. Allston, 32 John Street, Ilion.
