John Prindle, School Head, Dies at Ilion

Ilion - John Guy Prindle, 60, of 14 Philip St., principal of Ilion High School since 1920, died early this morning in Ilion Hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 23.

He had been in poor health since last summer when he went to a New York Hospital for a serious operation. He returned to his desk in the school in December but later suffered a relapse and was taken to the local hospital.

Educator, Athlete

Mr. Prindle was outstanding as an educator and athlete and devoted a great deal of time to civic affairs serving as president of the Ilion Library Board. He was a past master of Little Falls, F&AM; a member of Knights Templar; the Ilion Community Club, Conversation Club, Shakespeare Club, Little Falls Country Club, and past president of the Mohawk Valley Athletic Association. He was also a member of the Secondary School Principal's Association and was an elder in the Presbyterian Church.

He was born in Williamstown, Mass., on July 4, 1890, the son of John F. and Lucy Ann Bridges Prindle. He attended Williamstown schools and was graduated from Williams College in 1913. He served as class marshal during his college days and played four years of varsity football and baseball. He was a member of Delta Upsilon and the Gargoyle Honorary Society.

After college he taught in Little Falls while John A. DeCamp was superintendent of Schools. He also coached football, baseball and basketball there.

Named in 1920

He was named principal of Ilion High School in 1920 and assisted in coaching football here. For 11 years he taught summer school in St. Lawrence University.

He married Ruth Decker on Dec. 23, 1915 in Little Falls. Mr. Prindle leaves his wife; one laughter. Mrs. Ruth Ann Carney. Ilion; two brothers, Carl, Boston and Cable, Williamstown, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Ott, Williamstown, and four nephews in Rye.

Friends may call at the Whiter Funeral Home this afternoon and evening and Friday afternoon and evening. Little Falls Masons will conduct ritualistic services at 8 p. m. Friday. The Ilion Lodge F&-AM 591 will also pay their respects. Members will meet at the temple at 7 p. m. tomorrow.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul Wagner, Presbyterian minister, officiating. The body will be taken to Troy for cremation. Friends are requested to omit flowers.
