Four Ilion Area Students Win Scholarship Awards Ilion - Four young men of the Ilion area have been awarded scholarships for higher education by the University of the State of New York along with seven other Herkimer County students. The scholarships provide $175 per semester to be applied to tuition in in any college or university in the state meeting the approval of the Board of Regents for scholarship purposes. Lester L. Short, Jr., valedictorian of the class of 1951 at Ilion High School passed the test taken in May with the highest rating of the locals, a 270. Top rating of 343.5 was awarded a Cazenovia Central School senior, Stephen I. Thompson. Also winning scholarships were John E. Kennell, 50 S. Fourth Ave., senior at Ilion High; William C. Hopanski, RD 2, a graduate of Mohawk Central School last year and a post graduate student in that school this year; and Thomas F. Adams, McGowan Road, salutatorian of the Ilion High School class this year. Short has been accepted at Cornell University; Kennell tentatively at RPI and Adams has expressed his intention of attending Forestry College at Syracuse.
