Ilion, Herkimer and Mohawk Students Win State Scholarship With Honors

Three graduates of the 1951 Senior Class of Ilion High School were notified this week that they had won New York State University Scholarships. Two of the Ilion students, Lester L. Short, Jr., and Thomas F. Adams, are Valedictorian and Salutatorian respectively, of the graduating class. The third Ilionite to be granted a scholarship is John E. Kennel.

Short, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester L. Short, 16 View Terrace, was a member of the National Honor Society and served as Senior Class President. He was a member of the varsity football, volleyball and track teams.

Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Adams, McGowan Road, East Frankfort, was a member of the National Honor Society and the Physics Club in High School. He served as a manager of the track team.

Kennel, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Kennel, 50 South Fourth Ave. was also a member of the National Honor Society. He was Junior Class President and attended Boy's State at Colgate University in his junior year. He was a member of the football, basketball, baseball, and swimming teams while in school.

The scholarships are issued to the pupils in each county of the state, ten times as many scholarships as there are assembly districts in the county. The holder of the scholarship entitled to one hundred and seventy-five dollars per term for the eight terms of his college course while attending any college. In the State of New York approved by the Regents for the purpose.

Seven other students in Herkimer County were awarded scholarships bringing the total to ten. Others who received the award were David C. Balderston and Ann P. Reardon, Little Falls; Thomas Q. Vierthaler, William P. O'Bryan, Edwin W. Trefzger, Herkimer; William C. Haponski, Mohawk; and Joanne M. LaFaro of Frankfort.
