159 Ilion Graduates Told To 'Set your Sights on Success'

ILION - "Every man is the architect of his future," Dr. Donald J. D. Mulkerne, of Albany, told the 159 graduating seniors yesterday at Ilion Central High School exercises in the school auditorium,

"I speak to you today not only as a professor of 22 years experience, but as a father of seven children. You advice today, I gave my own children. "As an educator and a parent," he continued, "it is a time of mixed emotions, both a sad and happy time of taking inventory of some of the basic facts of life."

Speaking on the topic, "Averages Aren't Good Enough," he said, "Some have set their sights on mediocrity. Too many are willing to accept this as a goal. No business would set their sights on only 70 per cent success," he said. "If they did, they would go bankrupt."

"People are the same." He continued. "To make the most of your life you need to set your sights on 100 percent success."

"We are surrounded by averages. But when it comes to school and college, grade averages are not good enough. Take a good look at yourself. Examine your talents and goals, and analyze success and failure. Introspection and perspective are the ingredients of success."

First Payment

"You are what life is all about," Dr. Mulkerne continued. "Start now toward the good life by reflecting on the sacrifices made by your parents, friends, teachers and taxpayers on your behalf. You have incurred a great debt. These exercises are the first payment. The way you conduct yourself in the future is your chance to repay the debt."

"Consider every experience a target of opportunity," he said. "Don't mark time, make time."

Dr. Mulkerne listed the ingredients of success and imagination, endurance, willingness to assume responsibility and quality. "When you cease to be better, you fail to be good," he said. "Quality not quantity is your goal."

Work-And Work

Having talent and ability is not enough," he said. "You must strive as well as pray.

"Resolve now to make the most of every chance to pursue tasks with vigor," he concluded. "Work, work, work . . . that is how to succeed."

Dr. Mulkerne, chairman and professor of office administration at the State University of New York at Albany since 1950, has been a visiting professor at Boston University, Catholic University of America. Russell Sage College, and College of St. Rose, and has served as instructor at Columbia University.

He is also a member of the Institute for Certifying Sectarian, National Secretaries Assn. International, and was president of the Administrative Management Society.
