Press Steward at the 1980 Winter Olympics"I am writing regarding my dad, C. Edward Rhodes, IHS 1935. Dad was always very proud of the fact that he was a volunteer Press Steward at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. After he died in 2004, we donated his Olympic Collection - uniform, ID and numerous related items to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mt. Lake. There is a 1980 Olympic exhibit in place which uses several of those items including dad's full uniform. I know he would be very proud. If you go to the museum and visit the exhibit, the blue uniform is his and if you look closely, you will see that the ID badge on the manekin is his, picture and all. I know he would be so pleased that his experience is being shared in this way. They have done a beautiful job with the exhibit." (submitted by daughter - Cynthia Rhodes Smith) (April 5, 2006)

She started her teaching career in Rotterdam, NY, but Diane soon returned to the Mohawk Valley and began teaching at Herkimer High School, eventually retiring from Ilion High School where she taught 11th Grade Honors English, among other English classes. She was regarded by her colleagues and her students alike as a highly talented, dedicated, and engaging teacher. Diane was also a prolific crafts person, honed her talents when her kids were young making elaborate and beautiful birthday cakes, to extensive oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings later in life. She had success selling her artwork online and at various shops, most notably the Artworks cooperative in Old Forge, NY. Her creations live on in homes of friends, family members, and strangers all across the world. She also sewed, knitted, and crocheted beautifully. Diane enjoyed her home, flower gardens, and especially her beloved sons and five grandchildren. Douglas William Fay Sr. IHS 1961 age 63, passed peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday morning, June 13, 2007. He is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Amanda, sons Doug and John, as well as his mother Jeanne Nabinger, father Bill, and his sister Leslie. Doug was born in 1943 in Ilion, N.Y., where he spent his childhood. He left Ilion to attend the University of Wisconsin, where he graduated in 1965 and fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a metallurgist. Doug married Betty in 1972 and they moved to Claremont in 1978 to raise their three children. Doug spent the majority of his career at Pine Tree Castings, where he became one of the industries' leading and most well respected metallurgists. Doug was a brilliant metallurgist whose ideas helped reshape the industry he loved so much. He had recently retired at the end of April to spend more time with his family. To his wife Betty, he was an adoring and devoted husband. To his daughter Amanda and his sons John and Doug, he was an amazing father. To his grandson Sam, he was a superhero and they shared a bond stronger than any alloy he had ever cast. In his spare time, Doug enjoyed many activities. He loved reading about all subjects and was a sponge for knowledge. An antique muscle car would always stop him in his tracks and taking sunrise photos of Lake Champlain would always bring a smile to his face. Nothing could compete however with sipping a good cup of coffee while being enveloped by a favorite blues record emanating from one of his many vintage stereos, perfectly tuned to feel every crack and hiss from the speakers. Doug Fay was a loving husband, and a devoted father and grandfather, but he was also a renaissance man, a brilliant man, with the mind of a scientist and a soul of a poet. His love warmed everything, like rays of sunshine and he will always be loved and truly be missed by all who ever had the pleasure of knowing him. A time of fellowship and sharing will be held Tuesday evening, June 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont, N.H. The family suggest that donations may be made in his memory to the Sullivan County Humane Society, P.O. Box 111, Claremont, NH 03743. To view an online memorial, send a message of condolence or for more information visit, www.stringerfh.com. (June 27, 2007)
