Paul D. Appley, IHS 1985, of Whitesboro, NY, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, with the ones he loved the most by his side. He fought a courageous battle with ALS. He was truly a Superman. Paul was very humble, patient, proud and kind. He loved very deeply. Paul was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Julie Sherlund Appley. They were joined in marriage July 3, 2016 on the beach in Cedarville, MI. He was the best father in the world to his two sons, Joshua (Meghan) Appley of Gaithersburg, MD and Daniel Appley (Emily Jory) of Ilion. Paul was the happiest in his final days spending time with his grandson, Kaden Appley, and puppies, Sam and Leo. Paul was born in Herkimer, NY on August 9, 1967, to Gordon Appley and the late Gayle Walker. He was raised and educated in Ilion, NY as a member of the class of 1985. After graduating from St. Luke’s School of Radiography in 1997, Paul worked at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center as a CAT Scan Supervisor until his retirement in 2018. Paul had an infectious smile and he lit up a room wherever he was, even on his hardest days. He amazed everyone with his strength, positive attitude, spirit and grit. Paul loved to travel, especially anywhere that had a beach. He & Julie traveled to Jamaica, Punta Cana, Florida, Washington DC, Myrtle Beach, Pearl Harbor, Maui and Aruba in their short time together. They joined friends in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota and Detroit for a game. They attended weddings for family in Grand Rapids MI and Nashville KY. There wasn’t anywhere Paul would not go to see his son’s play. Paul’s favorite vacation was the annual trip to the Upper Pennisula of Michigan with his family. His favorite time of day was Sunset and he loved happy hour, especially at home on his deck. It was a party whenever he was present. Paul was an avid sports fan and loved his Red Sox, Cowboys, Orangemen, Lakers and Rangers. He loved watching Dan play football for SUNY Cortland and was lucky enough to watch the Red Dragons win their first National Championship title this year before he passed. Paul was an active participant of the Barringer Road Old Men’s Basketball League for many years. His greatest joy was coaching his boys and being the model Father. Paul renewed his love for golf when he met Julie and they enjoyed many rounds in many places together. Paul was most passionate about wrestling as he had a long career with the sport, first as a wrestler for Ilion and SUNY - Morrisville then as an official for over 30 years. Following his time as an active official on the mat, he continued to serve the association as the President of CNYWOA. He was inducted into the Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2022. Wrestling was the reason Paul & Julie met. Paul enjoyed to read, was an avid history buff, especially about native American tribes and World War II battles. He spent significant time reading the Bible, “I want to make myself right with God,” he said. He knew Jesus was waiting for him. Paul is survived by his loving wife, sons, and grandson. He is also survived by his bonus children, Matt (Kayla) Sowers of Marcy and Emily Sowers (Jon Raineri) of Syracuse. He leaves behind his dad, brother Darrin Appley, sisters Kristyn Silva and Sharra Appley. Paul was especially loved by his in-laws and Michigan family, Robert and Laura Sherlund and the entire crew. He left many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his mom, his treasured pets Howie and Newman, his maternal grandmother, Grandma Walker and niece Harper Grace Sherlund. They all had a profound impact on his life. Equally important to Paul were his friendships, specifically, Brett Couchman, who showed him the way through life, marriage, and death, and Daniel Ploutz. The three of them were able to share a lifetime of memories together. Paul was a member of the Ilion Elk’s Lodge BPOE #1444 for over 30 years. In addition to the people above, the family would like to thank Dr. Young and her team from the Upstate Medical Center, Neurology & the ALS Clinic who guided Paul through life and death; Sandy Tucci, Paul & Tina Fiorini, Kathy Smith, and the CAT Scan Department of St. Elizabeth’s. The family would also like to send a huge thank you to the first responders, the ER and ICU staff at Wynn Hospital especially RNs Jessica, Andre’ and Tony. Julie is forever grateful to all of her kids, family, M&T Bank family and loyal friends for their support. Services will be held on Wednesday December 27, at Dimbleby Funeral Home, Inc. Friends are invited to call on the family from 3 PM to 6 PM with a service to follow immediately. Paul has chosen his final resting place to be in Cedarville, Michigan at a later date. This was his favorite vacation every year, where he fell in love and his family was blended. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you please consider a donation to ALS of Utica or The ALS Association of Upstate New York. These two organizations helped this family when they needed it the most. Take care of him Grandma Walker, your boy is home.(December 31, 2023)

New Kids on the Block..."Hello to everyone! Just want to announce the birth of our second child, Olivia Susanne, born July 11th, 2001, 6 pounds 14 ounces. She's a real cutie. Her older brother, Alek is almost 2 1/2 and is a very active, inquisitive kid! We moved from Knoxville, Tennessee to Oxford, Pennsylvania last year and are enjoying a much more rural life in the heart of Amish country. Andy is working for the US Army as a civilian research engineer in Aberdeen, Maryland and I am busy at home with the kids and work two nights a week at a local vet hospital. Would enjoy to hear from anyone." Leslie Rogers Wereszczak (August 4, 2001) Andy and I proudly announce the arrival of our first child, Alek Andrew, April 15th. He was 8 pounds 3 ounces and is absolutely wonderful! Motherhood is incredible. We are still living in Knoxville, TN and like it very much. When I think about complaining of the heat, I remind myself of the Mohawk Valley winters. I would love to hear from anyone and if y'all ever mosey down yonder to our neck of the woods we'd be much obliged to give you'ins a warm Southern welcome..." (modified Jan 24, 2004) "Hello Everyone! Gosh, it has been a long time since I have looked at this site and I thought it was time to update everyone on the Marro Family. Let's see, Mike is still a CO at Marcy Correctional Facility. Still plays with Stevie Rigo when he can. He is looking forward to Little League Softball for our daughter and baseball for our son in the next few months. He volunteers his time with Little League and between us, we provide the music for the the Ilion Synchronized Swim Club every summer. That keeps us outside all summer long! Amanda is almost 13. What a fun age this is!! LOL. She is in the seventh grade and can't understand why her parents keep getting lost in the new High School! She is loving Jr High so far and is also looking forward to spring and softball. She is still dancing at Dee's as well. She is loving the Jr High choir and sings her heart out. She is also teaching herself how to play the keyboards. Mike is trying to help, but keeps a distance because she is doing so well on her own. Alexander is 6 and is still very busy! He wants to be a "baseballer like Derek Jeter" this spring! We'll see if he inherited any of Mike's sports talent. God knows if he has mine, he will be a splinter picker for life! He is very musically inclined, like his sister and father. He has a full drum set in the cellar and he sings like an angel. We'll see what happens with that in the future. As for me, I am still a stay at home mother. I substitute teach when the mood hits me, but for the most part, I am just about always home. I underwent a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in August of 2003. I am really hoping that we will have a 20 year reunion next year because by then, I will look more like I did in High School, weight wise anyway! The pounds are just falling off of me and I am loving every minute of it. So, that is the Marros of the class of 1985. Please email or call us any time and let us know how you are. All the Best!" I'm very anxious to hear from anyone that would like to write to me. I am currently still in the military and stationed in Korea. I know the 20 year reunion is coming up and would like to see if I can be a part of it. I'm not the wild man like before and have changed my ways considerable. I am married(12 years now) and have one boy (13years). I will enclose 2 email address's and would love to hear from all of you." Andy has taken his old job back after finding the US Army is not nearly as fun as the friends he worked with down here. It has been a good move for us and our kids are young enough to move and not have it matter. I am primarily a "stay at home mom" but we never stay at home running here and there carting the kids around. Alek is almost 4 and Olivia is 18 months. They sure keep me busy and are a lot of fun. I am working one evening a week at the veterinary college to keep my licensing requirements, but more importantly, to have a real adult conversation from time to time that doesn't include the phrases,"Get down from there!" or "Don't put that in your nose!" I would love to hear from anyone!" Paul Appley, email , from Ilion, NY, is registered in the directory. I got our yearbooks today...after explaining to our 11 year old daughter, Amanda, that we are not 'strange looking', I decided to get on the computer and update you all. Mike is still a NYSDOCS officer at the Marcy Facility. He still plays with Stevie Rigo. He is also practicing with Carmond Brickfield for the Jam Fest for reunion weekend. Mike is also coaching one of the Little League Girls Softball teams. Needless to say, he is just about always pretty busy. I have been lucky enough to be a stay at home mom for the past 2 years. I never thought I would like not being out there in the workforce, but this is the best job! I am very lucky! Amanda will be 11 on May 29. She is in 5th grade at Barringer Road. We can't believe that she will be graduating next year. She is into dance classes at Dee's, softball and has taken up the clarinet this year. Alexander will be 5 on August 8. He is graduating from the Universal Pre K program next month. He will be attending Barringer Road in the fall. He is just plain busy! All boy and we wouldn't have it any other way. Mike and I will be celebrating our 12th anniversary on May 26. Hard to believe we have been together since February 1985! 17 years! Last September, the Census came to an end, and so did my career with them. :( It was the best job I have ever had, but now I am a stay at home mom and I love it! I just started a new career with Creative Memories. Between getting Amanda ready for 5th grade and Alexander ready for pre-K, scrap booking has become a new passion for me! If any of you are interested in scrap booking, drop me a line. Mike just had some minor surgery on his right carpal tunnel. He was injured at work last year and they finally fixed the nerve damage that was done to his hand last week. He was pretty worried that he would not be able to play again, but he says that his hand feels good enough to give it a try. Mike is featured on Stevie Rigo's latest CD. He wrote and plays keyboards on the CD. We are still on Barringer Road in good old Ilion and we would love to hear from you! Please feel free to call or stop in any time! We are in the book!." - Jenn Dale Miller, Registered Nurse, from Longwood, FL., email , sent news "Hi Everyone! We made the big move to Florida in January. It took a whole 2 hours to get offered several jobs. I currently manage a 60 bed sub-acute unit, with weekends off to hit the beach and relax! Tonight it's expected to get about 15 degrees below zero and with the wind chill it sure feels a lot worse!!!! You know the coldness which bites at your nose and sends thuds of pain through your ears? The kind of night to make sure that you gas tank is definitely not on empty!!! I really wanted everyone in my class, who has moved south to know why exactly they did it!!! I did finally pass my Certified Internal Auditor exam and finally have the three initials CIA after my name. Our daughter (5) has started kindergarten at Remington. She can have quite the attitude, I haven't figured out where she got that from!!! Our son (3) has developed a liking to bake goods and chocolate, and I definitely know where he got that from!!! I think this is great especially since I missed our 10 year reunion due to the fact that I delivered my second son, Owen, on June 15, 1995. Well, as you've noticed I'm married and have been for 7 years. We have two blond haired blue eyed boys (they take after their father) named Kyle who is 6 and Owen who is 3. We live in New Jersey in a small town that reminds me a lot of Ilion. After working in NYC as an Accountant for 3 years I decided to become a stay at home mom when I gave birth to my first son. My husband still works in NYC and makes the 3 hour combined commute every day. I now run my own small business called HAV Bookkeeping out of my home office so that I can still stay at home with my children. I would love to hear how everyone is doing. I love it! I am living in Chicago and work for Andersen Worldwide Global Real Estate Management group in Workplace Strategy (we don't have titles, so I made one up)...actually using the degrees I got at Cornell is '89 and '91. I've been pathetic about reunions, because my job has me traveling almost constantly (22 countries at last count), but I do get back to Ilion for holidays. Every once in a while I have a memory flash about an event at IHS, and I think back fondly. Thanks to all the teachers who really made an impact of me when I was in school...we never appreciate it when we're in the middle of it! Happy holidays to one and all!"
