Dr. Sherwood Ackler Haggerty was the son of Nathaniel and Martha Ackler Haggerty. He was born in Litchfield. He was joined by two brothers, Floyd and Arthur Haggerty. After receiving his secondary school education, at Ilion, he taught for two years. In 1890, he began as a teacher at Spinnerville school and in district number six, Cranes Corners. In September 1892, he began his medical studies at Albany Medical College.

Sherwood Haggerty graduated from that Albany Medical College in 1895. He moved to Monticello, in July 1895, and took over the medical practice of Dr. John Conkling who had moved to Cooperstown. On October 3rd, 1895, Sherwood married Miss Leila R. Maltby, at the residence of Eugene Maltby, Litchfield. They welcomed the birth of a son, Gordon Haggerty, in 1897.

By 1919, Sherwood Haggerty had moved his family and practice to Richfield Springs. The mother of Dr. Haggerty, Mrs. Martha Haggerty, died on June 20, 1922, at the home of her son, Arthur Haggerty, North Third Avenue, Ilion, following an illness of over a year. Nathaniel Haggerty, 87, father of Dr. Haggerty, died July 19, 1931 at the home of his son, Dr. Sherwood Haggerty, Richfield Springs. They are buried in the North Columbia Cemetery.

Gordon Haggerty, son of Dr. Sherwood Haggerty, married Miss Nina Belle Johns, of Johnstown, on September 20, 1924. Gordon was a graduate of Richfield Spring High School and Albany College of Pharmacy. Their son, Robert Johns Haggerty, was born in 1925 in Saranac Lake, where his father Gordon was being treated for tuberculosis. They settled in Worcester, New York, where Gordon operated a pharmacy. Young Bob Haggerty would often go on house calls with his grandfather, Dr. Sherwood Haggerty. Robert Haggerty would follow in his grandfather's steps and graduate from Cornell Medical School in 1949. He later specialized in pediatrics and went on to be Pediatrician-in-Chief, Professor, and Chairman of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester, NY. In 1983, Dr. Robert Haggerty was elected to President of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). He was selected as the 1998 Howland Award and Medal recipient.

Richfield springs lost its senior physician and veteran, Democratic politician in the death of Dr. Sherwood A. Haggerty at Bassett Hospital on Thursday evening, June 15th, following a long illness. He was 72 years old.

The son of Nathaniel and Martha Ackler Haggerty, he was born in Litchfield. After receiving his secondary school education at Ilion he taught two years then attended Albany Medical College, from which institution he was graduated in 1895. On October 3rd, of the same year he married Miss Leila R. Maltby.

Practically all of his professional life was spent in the towns of Richfield, where he enjoyed a large practice. He was at Richfield over 25 years and has resided in Richfield Springs about 25 years.

A lifelong Democrat he was deeply interested in politics and an active worker in his party. Running for the supervisor-ship of the town of Richfield he broke up the natural Republican plurality in the town and was elected six times serving a total of twelve years. Dr. Haggerty earlier had served as Justice of the Peace.

Dr. Haggerty was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and was active in its affairs. he served several terms as a vestryman. A member of Richfield Springs Lodge, no. 453, F. and A. M., he served his lodge as Master. He was also a member of Richfield Springs Chapter, Royal Arch Mason, and served as its High Priest.

Dr. Haggerty had a large circle of friends spreading far beyond the confines of his practice and he will be greatly missed both as friend and physician.

Mrs Haggerty survives; also one son, Gordon Haggerty of Worcester; a grandson, Robert Haggerty, pre-medical student at Cornell University; and,two brothers, Floyd H. Haggerty of Mohawk and Arthur N. Haggerty of Albany.

The funeral was held in St. John's Episcopal Church at two o'clock Sunday afternoon, the Reverend Roscoe C. Hatch, rector, officiating. There was a short Masonic service at the church. Interment was made in the North Columbia Cemetery.

Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Gordon A. Haggerty, Worcester; Robert J. Haggerty, Ithaca; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Haggerty, Mohawk; Arthur Haggerty, Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haggerty and two sons, Albany; Mr. and Mrs. John Johns, Johnstown; Mrs. Lola Haggerty,Bridgewater; Mr and Mrs. Fred, Walker; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Baldwin and Harold Walker, Ilion.
