SUNY-ESF Salutes Mr. Thomas SlocumAlumni Director Emeritus, Justin Culkowki, featured 1963 Ilion alumnus, Thomas Slocum, in a cover story for the Winter 2015 edition of the 'SUNY-ESF Alumni News'. Thomas Slocum was the Director of Career and Counseling Services at SUNY ESF (College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry in Syracuse, NY). The insightful and lengthy article highlighted Tom's academic background and career. He majored in Biology in college at SUNY Brockport and while there, he was a Resident Advisor. He also attended SUNY Albany where he earned his master's degree in Higher Education Student Personnel Administration. Tom's first positions were with SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY New Paltz and finally at SUNY-ESF where he remained for 31 years. Tom's career at the college was so exemplary that he received the State University Chancellor Award for Excellence in Professional Service and was twice awarded with the student Special Recognition Award. The 2008 ESF yearbook was dedicated to Thomas Slocum. Many other of his career achievements were featured in the article. Since his retirement, Tom has been spending time with his four grandchildren, golfing, fishing, spending time in his woodworking shop and enjoying summers, with his family, at their Seventh Lake camp. In the article, Tom was asked to share some advice for students. One of his points was "Keep in touch with family, friends and the College. These all become very important to you after you leave ESF." Ilionites can keep in touch with Tom at toslocum@esf.edu. The original cover story is available to read, online, at Winter 2015 edition of the 'SUNY-ESF Alumni News'. Marie 'Cookie' Anjani Cirillo, IHS 1963 - It is impossible to think about the Sebastian Clambake and not remember Anjani Cirillo, whose drive popularized the annual November festival, drawing attention to the importance of the Indian River Lagoon. Cirillo, 76, died April 28, 2022, after a long fight with cancer. She is remembered for raising millions of dollars for local nonprofits through the annual clambake and lagoon festival. "She was the face and the center of the clambake for 20 years," said Sebastian resident and friend Teddy Hulse, the current vice president of the Sebastian Clambake Foundation. "Anjani gave her heart and soul to the clambake 365 days a year right up to the end." A native New Yorker, Cirillo grew up in upstate Illion, graduating from SUNY Brockport in 1967. She spent several years in the Peace Corps traveling across Asia, and later worked as a recruiter for the Peace Corps in New York City. An early supporter of the feminist movement, Cirillo helped raise awareness for women, working alongside other political activists and feminists including Gloria Steinem and Shirley Chisholm. In 1975, Cirillo had a spiritual awakening and connected with Ma Jaya Bhagavati, the founder of Kashi Ashram on Roseland Road in Sebastian. Ma Jaya's teachings of service and kindness would become a powerful force in Cirillo's life and in 1979, she moved to Sebastian to live at Kashi Ashram. She served as principal of the River School at Kashi until retirement, and then joined the Kashi staff as community relations director, becoming a Swami and teacher in 2005. When the Sebastian Clambake began in 2002, Cirillo volunteered for the community event, working alongside Clambake founder Rich Stringer. Three years later, Cirillo became president of the Sebastian Clambake Foundation and served for more than a decade. In 2009, she was recognized as TCPalm/Sebastian Sun's Woman of the Year for her outstanding contributions to life in Sebastian. Cirillo is survived by her sister Pat Brooks, nieces Peyton Preslar and Shalon Olesko, and nephew Louie Bertino, and three great-nephews and one great-niece.
