See the Golden Bombers in action this Fall and enjoy a great HomeComing Weekend, October 17th! GOooooo BOMBERS! (August 4, 1998) The 21st Boilermaker Road Race...Ilion's Stephen 'Chris' Getman '92, ran the second fastest time of any local man in the 1998 Boilermaker 15K road race. Chris just recently moved to Devon, Pa but still qualified as a "local man". Chris finished the course in 48:29 which landed him 40th position overall. Chris was also the top area men's finisher in 1995. This year, he improved his 1997 Boilermaker time by 19 seconds. In 1997, he was the second-fastest local man. Marc Gage, from Mohawk, was the top local finisher in 1997, but finished this year's race in 48:45, just behind Chris. Nate and Kevin Getman, IHS Class of '94, were also in the Top 100 finishers. Nate finished 50th with a time of 50:25. Kevin ranked 93rd with a time of 53:16. The Boilermaker is the nation's biggest 15k road race. Congratulations to all Ilionites and former Golden Bombers who ran in The 21st Anniversary Boilermaker 1998 Sunday, July 12, 1998 at 8 AM. You can search the Boilermaker 1998 Registration Data Base to see if any former classmates participated this year's race. Ilion Captures Section III Class B Boys Volleyball Title....The Golden Bombers ended a 20-0 season with a 15-9, 6-15, 15-10, 15-12 win against defending champion Mount Markam. The championship games were held in Canastota High School on Saturday March 14, 1998. Before the Bombers faced Mount Markam the second time, during regular season play, the coaches and the entire team shaved their heads. During the championship games, Assistant Coach, Mark Gedeon, dressed as The Bomber Bear, to make sure they won! Congratulations to the team and Coach Jeremy Rich!! (March 22, 1998)
Ilion's Section III Wrestling Champ Is 2nd in State....Senior, Brad Darrow became the first Ilion wrestler to reach the New York State Wrestling Tournament finals, placing second to National Greco-Roman champion, Josh Etu, of Queensbury. Etu was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Brad finished the year with a 34-4 record. He was a two time Class B champion and Ilion's first Section 3 champion, since Tim Hyer won in both 1977 & 1978. The only previous Ilion state place winners were: Pete Keddell, who placed 4th in 1970, and Tim Hyer, who placed 6th, in 1977. The state wrestling tournament started in 1964. So Ilion's other sectional champions, PeeWee Jones, Brian Jones, Floyd Rose and Jack Noll never had the opportunity to wrestle at the 'states'. Considering Ilion's rich wrestling tradition, Brad's accomplishment is considerable. Congratulations Brad!! (March 9, 1998)
