Todd Smithson, IHS 1981, age 62, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 29th, 2026, at his home in Ilion, New York. Todd was born in Ilion on June 19th, 1963, the son of Robert and Mary Jane Smithson. A lifelong resident, he graduated from Ilion High School, a proud member of the Class of 1981. Todd began work with the Village's Power & Light Department not long after school, eventually becoming Foreman with more than 30 years of dedicated service. Todd married Vikki Patterson on August 28th, 1993, in the historic Chesham Place in Ilion. With their children Justin and Richelle, they created a life built on the love of family and days filled with organized chaos and happiness. Todd looked forward to any opportunity to drop a line in a quiet pond or stream in the Adirondacks. Like any good fisherman, he probably had more fish stories than actual fish, but the stories were awesome. Even more than a relaxing day in the woods, Todd loved to be part of the party, not just a part of the crowd. He enjoyed a good game of golf as much as spending time with friends at any of the clubs and organizations in town. While he seldom requested help for anything, he was quick to offer his own time. He was committed to his opinions but willing to listen to yours. Todd was truly happiest when surrounded by family. He planned several events each year to bring family and friends to his beloved Trading Post at home. Halloween movie night was a family favorite. He loved to cook and there was always hot food on the grill and cold drinks in the fridge. For years Todd and Vikki organized family holidays, the biggest being Thanksgiving, which eventually grew to include so many they had to use the K of C to have enough room for everyone. And after days of planning and cooking and serving a couple of turkeys with all the sides for 30 or 40, Todd still managed to be sure Santa made a quick appearance to get a good start on all of the kids' Christmas lists. Todd quickly put aside anything he may have been doing if Vikki and the kids needed him. He supported Justin in every way as he took part in school musicals and plays and continuously worked to develop all of his talents. When Jay and two of his friends decided to start a garage band and Todd realized the boys were pretty serious, Todd and Vikki provided a place to practice and even a way to move their equipment when they started playing. Todd took enormous pride as the first official roadie. Then boys were too young, so he served as a driver and a chaperone at all of their early gigs. Richelle was also busy with school and playing sports as well. Todd and Vikki were at all of Richelle's games, either on the bleachers or helping with the concessions or setting up fields. Between games they had practices and fundraisers. And there were all of the other school activities of course. After school Todd and Vikki continued to stand with Justin and Richelle as they looked forward to everything life brings, growing families, new challenges and opportunities. Todd was there. The only thing which could garner more of Todd's attention than Justin and Richelle were the grandkids, Jake, Jameson, Brody and Oliver. He was the proudest of grandfathers and there were no limits to what he would do for them. Todd shared an incredible, strong, personal bond with each of the grandkids. He loved to watch Oliver's love of music grow, he learned so much from Jameson's enduring strength in the short time he was with us, he truly enjoyed Jake's inquisitive spirit, and he shared Brody's love of sports, especially wrestling. Todd was there. Todd was always there. And in his moments of pride, or while sharing a quick joke, you might notice a small grin in the corner of his mouth. You might not see it right away, he didn't always wear a big smile, he didn't frequently laugh out loud. He laughed with his heart, and you saw it in his eyes. Try as he might to hide them, his pride and his joy were unmistakable. Todd is survived by his beloved wife Vikki; his children and grandchildren; Justin and Jessica Smithson and Oliver, Richelle and Shawn Devereese and Jake and Brody; his sister Robyn Damron, his sister and brother-in-law Lynne and Mike Orendorf, his special aunts; Bridget and Peter Snyder, Barbara Smithson, and Toni Foisy, many special nieces, nephews, cousins, many special friends, including several who were like family; Tim Day, Jeff Steele, and Lorrie Bates, as well as his friends from the Winter Club and the Knights Of Columbus, his Class of 1981 and Ilion Golden Bombers schoolmates, and his coworkers. He also leaves his beloved pets Louie and Stewart. Todd was predeceased by his grandson Jameson, his parents, Bob and Jane, and Vikki's parents, Janet and Chick Patterson. Vikki and the kids invite family and friends to gather at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 11th, 2026, at the Ilion Knights of Columbus to share memories as we celebrate Todd's life. Please consider donations to the Herkimer County Humane Society in Todd's name as a remembrance. The family would like to thank the Ilion Fire Department, the Ilion Police Department and Kevin Enea for all of their care and compassion during this very difficult time. Todd's final care arrangements have been entrusted to The Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road in Ilion, New York. His obituary may be viewed on the funeral home website at www.eneafamily.com on the Internet. Todd - thank you for always being there for us, for teaching us we had the ability to achieve all of our goals, and for giving us everything we need to do so. All our love, forever. (April 15, 2026)

Norma (Samuels) Greenberg, IHS Alumnus, age 96, of Rome, NY, passed away on February 4, 2026, at Rome Health Hospital, with family at her side. She was born in Ilion, NY, in 1929, to Isadore and Lena Samuels. After graduating from high school, she married Samuel "Fred" Greenberg, a veteran of WWII's Pacific Campaign. Making a home in Utica, NY, they soon welcomed children and briefly moved to Miami, FL, before returning to Utica and eventually settling in Rome. Norma worked, part-time, as a bookkeeper, but transitioned to the role of homemaker to care for her children; later, she worked, part-time, at Rome Voluntary Action Center. She often volunteered at Bethany House Nursing Home, Rome, leading the residents in song and socialization. Active in the Jewish community and a longtime member of Adas Israel Synagogue, Rome, Norma participated in the congregation's Sisterhood and ran the gift shop for many years. Norma enjoyed entertaining friends and family with Freddy, playing cards and Trivial Pursuit late into the evening after summertime backyard barbecues. Her hobbies included the piano, singing, mahjong, knitting and crocheting; when Fred passed in 1995, she purchased a computer and quickly made lasting friendships across the globe in online communities centered around her interests. The computer fascinated her, keeping her connected with distant family over Zoom and allowing her to reminisce via YouTube of the Big Bands that she and Freddy enjoyed. Nothing delighted her more than family and keeping everyone connected: sharing memories of Freddy, her close relationships with her children and interacting with her great-grandchildren. She is survived by son, Mark Greenberg, of Canastota, NY; daughter, Jamie (John) Feldman, of Rome; grandchildren, Jared (Kelly) Feldman, of Rome, Jason Feldman, of Rivervale, NJ and Josh (Jacquie) Feldman, of Seneca, SC; and great-grandchildren, Liat, Aaron, Levi and Mila. Special family includes sister-in-law, Bobbie (Donnie) Mendleson, of Boca Raton, FL; niece, Denise (Bruce) Tredwell, of Brewster, NY, niece, Leslie Greenberg, of Tuscon, AZ; great-niece, Sarah Tredwell (fiancee, Alberto), of Poughkeepsie, NY; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; brothers, Harvey, Jules (Sivie) and Jack Samuels; and brother-in-law, Bill (Anita) Greenberg. The family is grateful for Norma's many neighbors who so kindly cared for and befriended her over the decades and the staff of Rome Hospital for their care and compassion. A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, February 8, at 11 AM, at House of Israel Cemetery, Wood Rd., Whitesboro; the family will be sitting shiva and greeting visitors, afterwards, from 3-7 PM, at Norma's residence in Rome. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to your favorite charity. Arrangements are being coordinated by Mark C. Bentz Funeral Service, Inc. of New Hartford. Ross Edward Raymond, IHS 1971, age 73, of Ferrisburgh, Vt., passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved deeply. Ross was born on November 12, 1952, in Ilion, N.Y., to Edward Raymond and Pauline LaVoie. He was a beloved brother to Paula and Mike Raymond and spent his early years in upstate New York, where he developed the quiet determination, curiosity and problem-solving spirit that would define his life. Soft-spoken, with a playful sense of humor and a warm, unmistakable smile, he was above all else a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a kind, genuine and steady presence, a man who listened more than he spoke, whose love showed not in grand gestures but in unwavering dependability. His children and wife knew without question that if they needed anything, he would find a way. Anything broken could be fixed. Any challenge could be worked through. He was the kind of man who showed up, every single time. Ross served in the U.S. Navy before returning home to New York, where he met the love of his life, Doris. Their lives together brought them to Vergennes, Vt., where they built their family home and raised their four children: Scot, Jessica, Keri and Brian. They were married for 44 years, and family stood at the very center of everything they valued. Ross's love for his family extended naturally to his grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He poured his creativity and care into everything he did for them, most memorably the intricate, handcrafted toys he built for each child. Intentionally detailed, beautiful pieces, each was finished with a carefully chosen wind-up sound box so that music and wonder were always part of the gift. Thoughtful, meticulous, generous and quietly extraordinary, these creations were a reflection of Ross at his core. A man of many talents, Ross had a love for solving problems and working with his hands. He brought that same care and ingenuity to his passions, from mechanics to music. Known to many as 'Blues Man Ross,' he was a self-taught harmonica player who played for the pure joy of it. He also took great pride in restoring a 1938 Harley-Davidson, a project that reflected his patience, craftsmanship and respect for attention to detail. Ross carried that same dedication and work ethic throughout his career, spending 30 years at IBM followed by another 17 years at BioTek. Incredibly stoic in nature, he endured far more than many ever knew, yet continued to show up for his family with courage and quiet resolve. Through it all, he taught those he loved that life is defined not by hardship but by the small, meaningful moments. That while every journey has an end, in the end, it is the journey that truly matters. Ross is survived by his wife, Doris; his children, Scot, Jessica, Keri and Brian; his sister, Paula, and brother, Mike; and his cherished grandchildren, Jenna, Ben, Olivia, Coen, Walker and Sully. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the things he built ... and fixed, the music he played, and the love that defined him 'til the very end. (February 27, 2026)
